LEADERS COME TOGETHER TO TOUR PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS AT SALTON SEA
State and national leaders came together to visit the Salton Sea and comprehend that the impending health problems that the public continues to confront. NBC Palm Springs united officials to receive a glimpse of what's being done to help restore a place which was a relaxing summer holiday destination.
The Salton Sea was a cool and happening place for sailors to enjoy sunlight and have fun in the water. Now the Salton Sea is a location where fish move to rust and is thought to be a public health catastrophe.
"What we want now is financing and also the most immediate requirement is to assist the countries fish and wildlife job that will insure 8-thousand acres at the Salton Sea so that we could continue to move the ball forward in a timely manner," explained Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, U.S. Representative of the 36th District.
"I've believed about the Salton Sea though I am not from California, and also the way we cure it so the folks around it could be cured," said Kaptur.
Governor Gavin Newsom has suggested an additional $220 million bucks in the coming California budget. But local residents know of numerous programs in the building with minimal actions being taken and they're still worried about the vulnerable playa resulting in worse air quality.
"I am as impatient for this because they are, the fantastic thing is that before we didn't have any strategy or cash or jobs and today we've got a strategy, we've got money and we've got jobs that we will need to expedite and rush so we could obtain the funds in the country, get the money from the national government to break ground," additional Ruiz.
"The People Who live around here, the kids, for Instance, have a much higher asthma rate compared to children in other Areas of the country, We Must fix this," additional Kaptur
We also talked to a professor that has been mapping the receding shore using a balloon and drone since 2018.
"There was a bargain before at which the farmers could pass through much more water over their property and then to the Salton Sea. And so from there on, right now before the future we're seeing an improved or accelerated decrease in the shore," explained Ryan Sinclair, Associate Professor at Loma Linda University.
Professor Sinclair says as 2018 the vulnerable playa in the north coast yacht club has improved 160 ft. Another concern is the absence of information on the Salton Sea and what contaminants might be living submerged.
